It is a slow start to February, but that’s good for me since I have a lot to catch up on, both from a watching and writing standpoint. So, let’s get to it.
80 for Brady (Theaters)
Director: Kyle Marvin | Writers: Emily Halpern
Stars: Rita Moreno, Sally Field, Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin
I feel like being a Bills fan and watching this film is an act of serious blasphemy. However, I drag my girlfriend to a lot of stuff she doesn’t want to see so I will return the favor and see something I don’t want to. I like the cast and I enjoyed Tomlin and Fonda together on Grace and Frankie, and the news of Tom Brady’s “real” retirement will make it more palatable, but I get the feeling this movie might make me physically ill. Perhaps I’ll bring a dildo to throw at the screen when Brady appears.
Knock at the Cabin (Theaters)
Director: M. Night Shyamalan
Writers: Shyamalan, Steve Desmond, Michael Sherman, Paul Tremblay (book)
Stars: Dave Bautista, Jonathan Groff, Ben Aldridge
I don’t know why the advertising has gone out of its way to hide the fact that this is an adaptation of Paul Tremblay’s book. The poster makes no mention and even the IMDB home page doesn’t show him listed. It’s really weird. Anyway, after Old my expectations aren’t very high for this. I do like the cast though and it’ll probably be the one I am able to see this weekend.
The Amazing Maurice (Theaters)
Directors: Toby Henkel, Florian Westermann
Writers: Terry Rossio, Terry Pratchett (book), Robert Chandler (additional material)
Stars (voices): Hugh Laurie, Emilia Clarke, David Thewlis
Yawn. Animated films have come a long way but this seems about as formulaic as it gets. It’s not a good sign when the trailer is boring because that’s supposed to be the sales pitch, so I will pass. Besides talking and being snarky, the cat doesn’t come across as amazing but it’s probably a good option for families though.
Full Time (Theaters)
Written & Directed by: Eric Gravel
Stars: Laure Calamy, Anne Suarez, Geneviève Mnich
A mom struggling to provide for her kids finally gets a crack at an interview that will allow her the ability to do so, but a national transit strike stands in the way. I am more interested than I anticipated but when I saw the pull quote “gripping thriller” I was spun for a loop. I don’t think it is a thriller and that’s not what made me interested. This one will probably be hard to find anyway, but it’s worth keeping an eye out for.
*Godland (Theaters) – Editor’s Pick*
Written & Directed by: Hlynur Pálmason
Stars: Elliot Crosset Hove, Ingvar Sigurdsson, Vic Carmen Sonne
This one is very much my speed. Creepy and haunting, with these about faith, god, and the devil colliding as the land tests you to your physical limits. And, I love the cinematography we see in the trailer. This is another one that will be hard for me to find in theaters, but, sign me up.
The Locksmith (Theaters + VOD)
Director: Nicolas Harvard
Writers: John Glosser, Ben Kabialis, Blair Kroeber (original story)
Stars: Ryan Phillippe, Kate Bosworth, Ving Rhames
So, this is the second movie I have come across in a week that is part of the Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment Company. I grew up with those books, but the films so far haven’t exactly been on-brand in that way. This looks like a rather generic ex-con thriller where the guy wants to straighten out but gets pulled back in…you know the drill. it has a good cast though and can be good if it hits its marks. It’s a good VOD option.
Thanks for reading! I still believe word of mouth is the best way to help, so if you enjoy what I’m doing, please tell somebody. And if you have a comment, I’d love to hear it! Liking, subscribing, and sharing go a long way too. As usual, be well, be safe, and have fun no matter how you get your movies!
